Tea Time … and a Contest Winner!

I’ve been wanting to make “bubble tea” at home for a year now, but could never find those large-diameter straws big enough for the tapioca pearls – I finally found them in an Asian grocery in Charlottesville, VA.

My first foray into using the tapioca pearls was to add them to this Thai iced tea. So pretty and delicious, and those chewy tapioca pearls coming up through the straw are such a treat. Who knew drinking tea could be this much fun?

Sigh ...congrats Rose even tho I really wanted it to be me! Is there a recipe for this bubble tea? I have never made it before but in my pre vegan days had it at a rest. and loved it! My kids would love it too! Oh btw I made the meatloaf from votc and it was sooooooo good and I could just drink the mushroom gravy that went with it!

Oooh bubble tea! This is one of those things that Ive always wanted to love but just cant handle. Something about the texture. I do, however, know many a bubble tea lover so I just might have to make this for them!

Hi, I really enjoyed browsing around your blog, I recently started my own if you would like take a look at www.veghunter.wordpress.com
keep up the great work!

I'm guessing the Rose who one was me?

If so, thank you so much! I'm really excited! What a fun contest!

That tea sounds fab too.

I agree, Nichole, tapioca is amazing -- so chewy and fun to eat!

Kim, here's how I make bubble tea with Thai iced tea. First I cook off the tapioca pearls according to package directions. Then, to make Thai iced tea I just brew about 4 cups of Thai tea (cha Thai) or black tea. Steep it a long time so it’s strong. While the tea is steeping and still hot, stir in about 1/2 cup light brown sugar, or more to taste. Stir until dissolved. Refrigerate until well chilled. You can then stir in up to a cup of non-dairy milk or add later to each serving (soy creamer or almond milk are good because they are thicker).

If using the tea to make bubble tea, you would spoon some cooked tapioca pearls into the bottom of each glass, then add the chilled tea and also add ice, if desired. Top with 1/2-inch of non-dairy milk (if you haven’t already added it to the entire batch of tea).

You can make “bubble tea” with different flavors other than Thai iced tea — that just happens to be my favorite. Also, you can make the “tea” thicker by blending it in the blender with some ice or frozen tea or fruit, depending on what flavor you’re making.

Jessica, you can just leave out the tapioca pearls from yours if you don't like the texture.

Yes, Rose, YOU ARE THE WINNER!!!!

Congrats!! Just e-mail me your address and I'll get the book right off to you.
